Artist: Camille Lopez
“Dayuhan” is alien, a stranger, foreigner, immigrant. The artist shares visual samples that evoke memories of her Filipino upbringing in Melbourne. Using modern multimedia techniques to present historical fragments, the artist connects her origins with her contemporary media practise in unexpected public places from a portable video projection system.
Challenging Filipino underrepresentation, the work focuses on integrating repurposed family-owned karaoke media to engage with the Filipino presence in Footscray.
The video is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by longtime creative partner and friend, Hoorataki, who creates sonic textures sampled from cultural sources.
