Vivid Flutter considers a population of butterflies (referred to as a kaleidoscope) that have made Footscray their home for one special night.
Built by grade 5 and 6 students from Wembley Primary School in Yarraville with a bit of help from Skunk Control, these butterflies display vivid colours that reflect and refract light creating an ever changing display of dancing coloured light and shadows.
Their segmented wings accommodate optical coloured filters some of which create peculiar colour effects. Positioned near solar powered lights, these colours become more pronounced in the dark. Some of these optical films allow for white light to be broken down into the colours of the rainbow (diffraction process) thus creating colours not through pigmentation but rather via structure.
