FOUR, THAT PLAYER

  • Footscray Railway Station Footscray, VIC, 3011 Australia (map)

ARTIST: FOOTSCRAY TRUGO CLUB

The unique game of Trugo was born at the Newport Railway Workshops around 100 years ago. Railway workers improvised a lunchtime amusement using found objects from around their worksite. Work mallets were used to hit a heavy rubber ring (part of a train's suspension) down the length of a railway carriage to score a goal. From these humble beginnings an indigenous western suburbs sport was born!

The game soon moved out of the railyards and onto the sporting fields. Played in Footscray since 1937, Trugo is thriving locally with the support of an enthusiastic band of residents. Let Footscray Trugo Club teach you the finer points of the game and its fascinating vernacular lingo.

Will you hit a Mary, or are you skilled enough to make a Madonna? Will your shots be ‘posters’ or will the catcher call out ‘True-Go!’ and ‘Four, That Player!’? Who knows, you might have what it takes to be a future Trugo ‘world champion’!
